Exploring the possibilities of porcelain as a material.
Beakers DR/TR/10 were created as a response to a project looking at local folklore.
For me, folklore represents spoken tradition, so it was natural to head to the Orkney Sound Archive as part of my research. This work is based on the recording, ‘Walter Meil’s Folklore’, from 12th March 1969, refrence DR/TR/10. To create the beakers I used sections from the visual ‘sound wave’ to create a vector image to export to CAD modelling software where I manipulated the wave to create the side elevations of the individual beakers. I then sent the CAD files to a 3D printing company (Shapeways) based in the Netherlands, to have them manufactured in porcelain.
The beakers sit/stack nicley together as a group representing the entirety of the story. They are also the perfect size for a wee dram or to hold a tealight candle; therefore can be used to facilitate conversation and the further passing on of spoken tradition.
